Transfer Student Direct Admission to Your Major

Do you already know what you want to major in at SPU? Good News! As a transfer student, you may be eligible for direct admission to a major at the time you submit an application to Seattle Pacific University.

Who's Eligible?

You may be eligible to apply for direct admission into one of the following majors listed below. Your eligibility for direct admission will be evaluated based on your GPA and completion of the prerequisite coursework related to your major of interest.

If you have not completed the prerequisite coursework outlined below, you should apply for general admission to the University and will have the opportunity to apply to your major once you have completed classes at SPU.

For priority review for direct admission into a major, please submit your application by the application deadline. 

Direct Admission Program Requirements

College of Arts and Sciences: Fine and Performing Arts

Music

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 3.0, audition on primary instrument, and completion of one year of music theory and aural skills.

Music Education

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 3.0.

Theatre

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 3.0, audition/interview, and completion of the following courses:

  • Stagecraft
  • Acting I

Visual Communication

Admission requires submission of a portfolio and completion of the following prerequisite coursework:

  • Art Foundations 1: Surface
  • Art Foundations 2: Space
  • Art Foundations 3: Time

College of Arts and Sciences: Humanities

Asian Studies

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 2.5 with completion of 2 history courses (10 credits).

Classics

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 3.2 with:

  • Completion of first year Latin or Greek sequence with 3.0 GPA or
  • Completion of 10+ credits within the discipline with 3.2 GPA

Communication (including Journalism)

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 2.5 with completion of 3 communications courses (15 credits).

Film Studies

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 2.5, submission of writing samples and a short film, and completion of three of the following courses:

  • The Art of Film
  • Introduction to Film
  • Film History I: Beginnings - 1960
  • Film History II: 1960 - Present
  • Art Foundations III: Time

French and Francophone Studies

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 3.2 with completion of first-year French sequence with GPA of 3.0.

History

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 2.5 with completion of 2 history courses (10 credits).

Linguistics and Cultural Studies

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 3.2.

Philosophy

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 2.5 or college-level GPA of 3.0 in 45 credits immediately preceding application to the major.

Russian Studies

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 3.2 with completion of first-year Russian sequence with GPA of 3.0.

Spanish Studies

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 3.2 with completion of first-year Spanish sequence with GPA of 3.0.

College of Arts and Sciences: STEM

Computer Engineering

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 3.0 and completion of the following courses with at least a 2.7 in each course:

  • MAT 1234 and MAT 1235
  • Minimum of 2 quarters of programming in the same language, including Data Structures (C++ preferred)

It is also expected that incoming engineering transfer students have completed Calculus III before enrolling at SPU.

Preference will be given to incoming engineering transfer students who have completed Physics I and Linear Algebra, and completion of Differential Equations is helpful.

Computer Science (BA)

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 3.0 and completion of the following courses with at least a 2.7 in each course:

  • One of the following two options
    • MAT 1234 
    • OR
    • both MAT 1221 AND Statistics (either MAT 2360 or MAT 2700)
  • Minimum of 2 quarters of programming in the same language, including Data Structures (C++ preferred)

Computer Science (BS)

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 3.0 and completion of the following courses with at least a 2.7 in each course:

  • MAT 1234 and MAT 1235
  • Minimum of 2 quarters of programming in the same language, including Data Structures (C++ preferred)

Electrical Engineering

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 3.0 and completion of the following courses with at least a 2.7 in each course:

  • MAT 1234 and MAT 1235
  • One of the following two options
    • Both PHY 1121 and PHY 1122 
      OR
    • Minimum of 2 quarters of programming in the same language, including Data Structures (C++ preferred)

General Engineering

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 3.0 and completion of the following courses with at least a 2.7 in each course:

  • MAT 1234 and MAT 1235
  • PHY 1121 and PHY 1122

Information Systems

Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 3.0 and completion of the following courses with at least a 2.7 in each course:

  • One of the following two options
    • MAT 1234
    • OR
    • both MAT 1221 AND Statistics (either MAT 2360 or MAT 2700)
  • Minimum of 2 quarters of programming in the same language, including Data Structures (C++ preferred)

College of Arts and Sciences: Social Sciences

Sociology

Completion of associate's degree (non-professional/technical) with completion of 10 credits of Sociology coursework and minimum college-level GPA of 3.0.

School of Business, Government, and Economics

Accounting

Completion of 90 college-level credits or an approved direct transfer degree with a minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 3.3 in both general coursework and prerequisites, plus completion of at least three of the courses listed below:

  • Financial Accounting
  • Managerial Accounting
  • Intro to Statistics
  • Microeconomics
  • Macroeconomics
  • Business Law

Business Administration

Completion of 90 college-level credits or an approved direct transfer degree with a minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 3.3 in both general coursework and prerequisites, plus completion of at least three of the courses listed below:

  • Financial Accounting
  • Managerial Accounting
  • Intro to Statistics
  • Microeconomics
  • Macroeconomics

Economics

Completion of 90 college-level credits or an approved direct transfer degree with a minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 3.3 in both general coursework and prerequisites, plus completion of at least three of the courses listed below:

Nursing

Completion of 90 college-level credits or an approved direct transfer degree plus completion of the following nursing prerequisite courses with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5:

  • Anatomy and Physiology (both courses must be completed at the same school)
  • General College Chemistry
  • Organic Biochemistry
  • General Psychology
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Nutrition
  • Microbiology
  • Statistics

If you intend to apply for the Nursing major, your application to SPU and to the Nursing major will be submitted by April 16. Nursing students will apply to be admitted for Winter or Autumn quarter 2019. Please refer to the nursing website for more information about the application process.
