Academic Dismissal and Reinstatement

After being placed on Probation Level 2, students have one more quarter to improve their academic standing. After this quarter, if a student‘s SPU GPA is still below a 2.0 and the quarterly GPA was not a 2.3 or higher, the student will be academically dismissed.

  • The student will be notified by email by Student Academic Services.
    • Housing, Student Financial Services, and faculty advisors are included in this message
  • The academic dismissal will be noted on the student’s academic record.
  • The student will be dropped from the next quarter’s classes.
  • An academically dismissed student can apply for reinstatement within two quarters and with completion of at least 15 credits of pre-approved courses through another institution with at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA.

Academic reinstatement

An undergraduate student seeking academic reinstatement will be required to meet the following conditions:

  • Meet with his or her academic counselor to develop a plan for reinstatement
  • Take a minimum of two quarters away from Seattle Pacific University (can include summer quarter)
  • Enroll in at least 15 pre-approved transferrable credits at a two or four year college or university, earning at least a 2.5 GPA (the 15 required credits cannot include more than four courses and must be taught in English). Courses must be pre-approved as sufficiently rigorous by the academic counselor. A Course Approval form is required.

Petition Process

If a student earns at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA in the 15 pre-approved credits, he or she is eligible to petition for reinstatement.  The following materials are required for a petition.

  • Academic Reinstatement Petition
  • Official transcript from the two or four year institution the student has attended since academic dismissal
  • A letter of reference from his or her faculty advisor or a faculty advisor in the student’s intended major.
    • Note: If the student has earned a 3.3 or higher cumulative GPA in the pre-approved courses, a letter of reference is not required.
    • If the student has been away from SPU for more than 4 quarters, a separate Re-Admission Application is required (Also see Academic Renewal).

Academic Renewal

If the student petitioning has not been enrolled at Seattle Pacific University for more than five years, the he or she may be eligible for Academic Renewal.  Students in this category would be able to petition for reinstatement without providing evidence of academic improvement through another institution.  Students would still need to complete the following steps:

If approved, students will re-enter Seattle Pacific University under the current catalog year and will be subject to any changes in degree requirements.

Deadlines

All petition materials (including transcripts) must be submitted by the deadlines listed below.

Autumn Quarter

September 1

Winter Quarter

Spring Quarter

March 1

Summer Quarter

*If the date is a non-business day, all materials must be submitted the business day prior.

Special Exception: If a student has earned a 3.3 cumulative GPA or higher in the pre-approved courses, he or she is guaranteed reinstatement. As such, petitions (must include transcripts) will be accepted up to 10 days prior to the start of the quarter for which the student is petitioning.

Letters of reference (if required) can be submitted online

Petitions are reviewed by the Reinstatement Committee within one week of the deadline, and the decision will be communicated by the University Registrar via email.  Petitions for students who have earned at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA be reviewed by the academic counselor and students will receive communication and registration information from the academic counselor within 10 business days.

If the student is reinstated, he or she will be restricted to a minimum of 13 credits and remains at the same probation status as when he or she left.

A student will still be considered on academic probation level two upon re-entry until his or her SPU GPA is a 2.0 or higher.  A reinstated student will be dismissed if he or she fails to attain either a quarterly GPA of 2.3 or higher or a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above by the end of the first quarter back.
