Information about SPU's Faculty/Staff Bulletin

The Faculty/Staff Bulletin is the weekly, internal enewsletter for SPU faculty and staff. All faculty and staff receive the Bulletin, and most items are submitted by its readers. Faculty and staff are encouraged to submit information to the Bulletin at fsb-editor@spu.edu or by selecting “Submit News” at the bottom of the Bulletin. The Bulletin is published on Mondays, and the deadline to submit information is the preceding Thursday. Submissions may be edited for clarity. The editor is Tracy Norlen, director of public information in University Communications. The Bulletin is divided into several sections.

Campus News & Events highlights the major news and events on campus. Only events related to SPU will be accepted. All faculty and staff are encouraged to submit information, including department news, campus events, or guest speakers on campus. Digital photos and graphics are especially welcome. When possible, event information will be published two weeks prior to the event. Remember to plan ahead when submitting information.

Faculty & Staff News is for professional information related to your position at SPU or in higher education. Items of interest are conferences attended, books or articles written or published, presentations made, awards received, or research completed. We especially would like more professional news from SPU staff.

Library Connections, written by library staff members, highlights different resources available to faculty and staff  to help with teaching and scholarship. This feature appears the first week of the month in the Bulletin, but is not published during the summer months.

From the Archives is a monthly feature showcasing photographs and stories from the SPU archives provided by University Archivist Adrienne Meier. The feature is published the last week of each month during the academic year, and is not published during the summer months.

This Month in the Garden is a monthly feature written by SPU Campus Master Gardener Jeff Daley, highlighting some of the plants, flowers, trees, and landscaping on campus. This feature contains photos taken by Jeff and a description of the plants. This feature is not published during the summer months.

SPU in the News lists most of the print or broadcast media appearances by faculty and staff. If you've been used as a resource for a reporter, let us know by submitting the information to the Bulletin.

Milestones is for personal news of interest to the SPU community, including births, adoptions, marriages, anniversaries, church services, mission trips, awards, and athletic accomplishments. Digital photos are always welcome. This section is also used for memorial service information.

Parking and Alternative Transportation Options for Faculty, Staff

A message from Safety and Security: SPU offers incentives for employees to use alternative transportation, such as bus, vanpool/vanshare, carpool, light rail, bicycling, and walking. We encourage alternative methods, not only to help minimize emissions, but also to help reduce the cost of commuting. Planning an Event? Reserve Your Campus Space Now

From Conference Services: As a new academic year begins and event requests are coming in, it's a good time for a few reminders about requesting space on campus. All space requests for meetings and events can be made through SPU Room Finder. For general campus space (classrooms, meeting rooms, etc.) the typical response time for a request is two business days. Requests for Upper Gwinn may take a bit longer, as the space is in high demand and Conference Services often needs to consult with other event requestors and service providers to confirm all event details before putting the space on hold. Once you receive a “Hold Email,” pay close attention to the deadline date of keeping or releasing the requested date, as other clients may be waiting for the same date. Please remember to wait for an official confirmation before moving forward with the planning of any event. Seminary Celebrates Recent ATS Accreditation

Seattle Pacific Seminary recently received its accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS). Faculty and staff are invited a celebration on Wednesday, September 28, 4-5:30 p.m. in the Library Seminar Room. A short program will begin at 4:45 p.m.




Zumba Fitness Class
Zumba Offered on Wednesdays for Faculty, Staff

Professor of Education Nyaradzo Mvududu is leading a free Zumba class on Wednesdays, 12-1 p.m. in the lower gym in Brougham Pavilion. The class is open to all faculty, staff, alumni, of all fitness levels. Nyaradzo, a licensed Zumba instructor, says the class is “fun and beginner-friendly. Money back guarantee! Let the beat carry you through this energetic dance workout set to international music tracks. You have until 9:59 a.m. on Tuesday, October 4, to have stationery order(s) delivered on October 14. Stationery orders are delivered once a month. Orders made after 10 a.m. on October 4 will be delivered November 11. To see deadlines and delivery dates for the remainder of the fiscal year, visit the “Create an Order” stationery page in Banner. Tickets on Sale for Sacred Sounds of Christmas

Tickets for SPU’s annual Sacred Sounds of Christmas concert are now available. This event sells out every year, so buy your tickets early. The concert is Tuesday, November 29, 7:30 p.m., in McCaw Hall at Seattle Center. Sacred Sounds of Christmas features the best of traditional Advent and Christmas music from around the world, performed by the Music Department's nationally recognized student and faculty musicians. Don MacDonald
MacDonald Co-Writes Article

Don MacDonald, professor of marriage and family therapy, co-wrote an article published in the summer 2016 edition of Philosophy and Religion. His co-authors are Esther McIntosh of York St. John University (UK) and Chris Sink of Old Dominion University. The article, titled “Macmurray on Relationality: A Tool for Systems Theory” looks at how a systemic worldview and positive psychology are embedded in the philosophy of John MacMurray, and argues that conceptual barriers between philosophy and social sciences are more perceived than real.




Jennifer McKinney
McKinney Co-chairs Conference

Professor of Sociology Jennifer McKinney served as the co-chair (with Jerry Herting from the University of Washington Sociology Department) of the regional committee for the American Sociological Association’s (ASA) annual conference in Seattle in August. In this capacity, she helped organize regional sessions and tours. Jennifer also co-authored several essays for the ASA’s newsletter related to Seattle as the host site.

Amy Mezulis
Mezulis Co-Authors Publications with Graduate Students

Two articles co-authored by Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology Amy Mezulis and Ph.D. students were recently published. The first, titled “Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia as a Predictor of Self-Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors Among Adolescents,” was published in International Journal of Psychophysiology and examines cardiac vagal tone as a predictor of nonsuicidal self-injury and suicidal ideation among 11-14 year olds. The second, titled “Disentangling Vulnerabilities from Outcomes: Distinctions Between Trait Affect and Depressive Symptoms in Adolescent and Adult Samples,” was published in Journal of Affective Disorders and examines how trait temperament can be differentiated from depression symptoms in both younger (11-14 years) and older (18-25 years) populations. Both articles were funded in part by a grant awarded to Amy from the National Institute of Mental Health.




Margaret Brown
Brown Presents Research

Assistant Provost and Professor of Psychology Margaret Brown presented a paper titled “Self-Determination, Intrinsic Motivation, and Civic Identity in Service Learners” at the annual conference of the International Association for Research on Service Learning and Community Engagement in New Orleans. The paper was co-authored by alumna Cierra Cooper '16, and examined the intrapersonal factors that motivate the formation of civic identity amongst students who participate in service learning.

This Month in the Garden

Flower fall 2016
Fall Pansies

From SPU Master Gardener Jeff Daley: With the fall months quickly upon us, this is the perfect time to plant fall pansies and violas. Their bright colors and happy little faces add a nice color splash to containers and flower beds. Well known for their cold tolerance, their color display will carry us through our Pacific Northwest winter months like nothing else. I start planting pansies on campus in September and they carry us through to June. Complementary fall plants that go well with pansies are chrysanthemums, asters, flowering kale, and cabbages. At home, I like to combine small decorative pumpkins along with pansies in my flowering containers. By poking a wooden chop stick into the bottom of the pumpkin you can place it anywhere in the container as the chop stick provides support. I include a few black pansies and a bright orange variety that has whiskers on their faces for a fun harvest touch in October.
