New Leadership for Admissions Efforts in Undergraduate and Graduate Programs

A message from Vice President for Enrollment Management and Marketing Nate Mouttet: 

I am pleased to announce new leadership for our admissions efforts in both the undergraduate and graduate programs.

During the 2014–15 academic year, we reviewed the work and role of Graduate Admissions and the University’s goal of increasing graduate enrollment by 25 percent. As a result of an assessment of Graduate Admissions and our graduate enrollment efforts, we are going to move toward a unified graduate and undergraduate recruitment and admissions office structure. This will allow us to share resources and best practices across undergraduate and graduate programs. Starting on July 1, we will begin new leadership in several roles in graduate and undergraduate admissions.

First, I am pleased to announce that Jobe Korb-Nice has accepted the position of senior director of recruitment and admissions. In this new role, he will oversee both undergraduate and graduate recruitment and admissions efforts. He will be particularly focused on developing the graduate enrollment structure and related strategies while also supporting new leadership in the Undergraduate Admissions office.

As Jobe gives attention to our graduate programs, we have asked Ineliz Soto-Fuller to become the new director of Undergraduate Admissions. I am pleased that Ineliz has accepted this role as she leads our undergraduate admissions team to recruit and enroll students who we believe are the best fit for SPU. Subsequently, we have asked Lora Yoder to move into the role of assistant director of freshman recruitment and to give leadership in the recruitment and shaping of our freshman class.

Finally, as Jobe provides oversight to graduate admissions, we have asked Jason Chivers to move from undergraduate to graduate admissions. Ted Hiemstra announced his retirement for the end of August, so we have asked Jason to become the new associate director of graduate admissions. Jason will work closely with Jobe to provide leadership to the recruitment for the School of Education programs. Jason will begin this role in August as we conclude the recruitment of our undergraduate transfer students.

I am excited to see the contributions that each person will make in these new roles. I also want to recognize the wonderful work and leadership Ted Hiemstra has provided as interim director for Graduate Admissions. Each member of Graduate Admissions team has patiently worked through this year as we conducted a review of our graduate efforts, and I am very thankful for their work and dedication to the success of SPU. 

In the coming days I will send further updates on how these changes will reshape our enrollment and marketing efforts. On June 25, I will provide a presentation to all of the Enrollment Management and Marketing staff on our direction for the coming year.

Staff Forum: Update on Internal Facility Planning

SPU’s Staff Council invites you to a presentation about the current work on the planning process for the future of SPU’s facilities. The architect will present an update, and Assistant Vice President for Facility Management Dave Church will be on hand for comments and questions. A continental breakfast will be available beginning at 8:45 a.m., and the presentation will begin at 9:15. Join us Wednesday, June 17, in Demaray 150, for food, fun, door prizes, and an informative presentation.




Camp Casey
Camp Casey Open House and Surplus Sale June 19

SPU’s Camp Casey Conference Center on Whidbey Island will host an open house on Friday, June 19, 12-4 p.m. Visitors will get a rare chance to have historians lead them on guided tours of the Colonel’s House every hour beginning at 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. The house is primarily utilized for retreat space for SPU leadership and special groups. Tours of the various barracks, Fort Casey Inn, and the mess hall will be featured. Guests can get a glimpse of the “Sea Lab” with Camp Casey naturalists. There will also be free admission to the outdoor pool as well as complimentary snacks.

New this year is a “Surplus Sale,” which will feature various Casey treasures including vintage furniture, World War II lockers, and other items. The sale will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Next Sitecore/Contribute Brownbag Lunch Is June 19

Have you been trained in Sitecore or Contribute but keep putting off making changes to your website? Join members of the UC Web Team this Thursday, June 18, for our monthly brownbag Q&A. Sitecore/Contribute Brownbags occur the third Thursday of most months, noon to 1 p.m. in the Lower Weter large conference room. If you want help with changes you need to make to your website, bring them with you and we’ll walk you through them. Announcing SPULink on June 24

The Center for Career and Calling, the Office of Student Employment, and the John Perkins Center will replace Joblink with a new job posting system and networking tool on June 24. Faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners are encouraged to join SPULink not only to post jobs, but also to find volunteers, speak on an employer panel, or meet with a student for an informational interview. Faculty and staff can find resources for student advising and internship postings, and to connect with SPU alumni and employers interested in speaking in classes. Watch for the launch on Wednesday, June 24, and sign up.




Office of Human Resources Closed June 25

The Office of Human Resources (HR) will be closed on Thursday, June 25, so that the HR team can attend the annual CUPA-HR conference in Bellevue. The office will re-open on Friday, June 26.




Welcome These Visitors on June 26

Hundreds of prospective students, as well as new students, will be on campus Friday, June 26. Undergraduate Admissions is hosting a Summer Visit day, and Student Academic Services is hosting a New Student Advising session. Look for these students and their families and make them feel welcome.

Roger Feldman
Feldman’s Work Exhibited

Three works by Professor of Art Roger Feldman are on exhibit in the "Bellingham National Art Exhibition and Awards," a juried show featuring artworks in a variety of media. The exhibit is at the Whatcom Lightcatcher Museum of Art in Bellingham and runs until September 6. The exhibit represents artists from 16 states and includes 101 pieces from more than 60 artists. Six hundred artists submitted more than 2,000 artworks. The juror was Scott Larimore, director of the Jacob Lawrence Gallery at the University of Washington. FCS Professors' New Books

Family and Consumer Sciences professors Sharleen Kato and Gaile Moe each authored new textbooks, which were released this spring. Sharleen’s book Teaching (2016), 2nd edition, was recently released by Goodheart-Wilcox, publishers for the secondary career and technical education market. Gail’s book, (co-authored with C. Byrd-Bredbenner, J. Berning, and D. Kelley), titled Wardlaw's Perspectives in Nutrition (2016), updated 9th edition, was recently released by McGraw Hill Publishers for the college/university market.

Baker’s Article Published

An article by Assistant Professor of Business Ethics Bruce Baker titled “Entrepreneurship as a Sign of Common Grace” was published in the Journal of Markets & Morality 18(1): 81-98.
