Mark Your Calendar for SPU’s Founding Day Party June 24

To help kickoff SPU’s 125th anniversary, come celebrate at our “Founding Day Party” at 1:30 p.m. in Tiffany Loop on Friday, June 24 (the 125th anniversary of the inaugural Board of Trustees meeting in 1891). The program includes a special appearance by Alexander and Adelaide Beers (Seattle Pacific’s first president and first “first lady”), an instant photo booth, and birthday cake and ice cream. All faculty and staff members attending the party will receive a free gift. Mark your calendars now, and watch for more information.

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences invites faculty and staff to the Interior Design Portfolio Show on Tuesday, June 7, 4‒7 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. The exhibit is the culmination of senior interior design students’ portfolios.

Camp Casey Fall, Winter Reservations

Fall and winter reservation requests are now being taken for the Faculty/Staff House at Camp Casey Conference Center on Whidbey Island. The dates of stay are September 26, 2016, through January 4, 2017. Reservation requests are due by June 17. (If you will not be regularly checking your SPU email, please indicate an alternate email so we can contact you should your name be drawn.) Fall and winter requests are selected by lottery and are not affected by summer stays at Casey. If you have questions, call 866-661-6604 or email campcasey@spu.edu. Falcons Forever BBQ
Faculty, Staff Invited to Falcons Forever BBQ; RSVP by June 8

A message from Alumni and Parent Relations: We’d like to invite faculty and staff to the Falcons Forever BBQ, a fun, summer-inspired food truck fest that both celebrates the graduates of 2016 and is a one-year reunion for the Class of 2015. Food trucks include People’s Burger, Flair Taco, and The Grilled Cheese Experience. The BBQ is Friday, June 10, 5:30 p.m. (preceding Baccalaureate) at the 5th Avenue Streetscape. Tickets are just $10 per person (kids under 10 eat free) and include a full entrée at the food truck of your choice. Purchase tickets by Wednesday, June 8. (No refunds will be processed after this date.) Tickets can be picked up at the registration table at the BBQ. Join us for the best in food truck cuisine, live music, and a chance to celebrate our new and recent graduates. RSVP online.

The Colonel's House at Camp Casey Conference Center
Camp Casey Open House June 17

SPU’s Camp Casey Conference Center will host an open house on Friday, June 17, 12‒4 p.m. Visitors will get a rare chance to have historians lead them on guided tours of the Colonel’s House and enjoy a talk by SPU Professor of History Bill Woodward on the origin of seacoast forts. The house is primarily utilized for retreat space for SPU leadership and special groups. Tours of the Colonel’s House will begin at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Guests can get a glimpse of the Sea Lab with Camp Casey naturalists. There will also be free admission to the outdoor pool as well as complimentary snacks. Visit the website for more information.

Seniors in visual communication design are hosting an exhibit of their work titled “Forward.” The exhibit runs through Thursday, June 9, in the Art Center Gallery. The gallery is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Join the Class of 2016 in Restoring SPU’s Rare Paintings

The 2016 Senior Gift Committee has elected to help fund the restoration and installation of two rare paintings by African-American artist Charles Ethan Porter, which were recently donated to the SPU John Perkins Center. The goal is $1,500, which will then be matched five times for a total of $7,500. To make an online donation, go to the spu.edu/givenow and select “other” and then specify “Senior Gift.” Learn more about the paintings and donors William Sacherek and Liselotte Lamerdin.

10th of the month
Staff Payroll and Benefit Changes?

The 10th of each month is the last day to make changes to your upcoming payroll check. Do you need to add or remove your spouse and/or children from your health care plans? If so, contact Human Resources (HR) to complete the appropriate form. Changes might include events that are expected to impact your benefits and deductions, such as your spouse or children gaining or losing coverage due to employment, birth, marriage, etc. Additionally, any changes you wish to make to your 403(b) account contributions must be made by the 10th of the month. For changes to your 403(b) account, contact Transamerica Retirement Solutions at 1-888-676-5512 (5 a.m.-6 p.m. PST), or 1-800-755-5801. If you have any other benefits-related changes, call Mardeth Hughes in HR at 206-281-2816.

The Faculty/Staff Bulletin is published weekly during the academic year. If you have information or event news, send it as soon as possible to Bulletin editor Tracy Norlen at fsb-editor@spu.edu. Submissions may be edited for clarity. The next deadline is Thursday, June 9. The next Bulletin will be published Monday, June 13, 2016. Beginning next week, the Bulletin will be published every other week during the summer.

Miriam Adeney
Adeney’s Recent Publication

Associate Professor of World Christian Studies Miriam Adeney co-edited Scattered and Gathered: A Global Compendium of Diaspora Missiology (Oxford: Regnum Books, 2016) under chief editors Sadiri Joy Tira and Tetsunao Yamamori. Miriam edited the section "Regional and National Case Studies in Diaspora Missions," which included assigning, acquiring, and editing chapters on ministry by Jews, Chinese, Indians, Koreans, Brazilians in the Arab world, Latinos, Iranians, and African immigrant ministries in and from the United States. Miriam also authored the chapter "Latino Diaspora Ministries in the USA" (pages 423-429).




Jeff Keuss
Keuss Awarded Templeton Grant

Professor of Christian Ministry, Theology, and Culture Jeff Keuss was recently awarded a two-year Templeton grant for the Oxford Gathering on Science and the Bible as Literature. Jeff was also a participant at two recent conferences. He was a roundtable participant for the Murdock Foundation Emerging Leaders in the Pacific Northwest symposium in Vancouver, Washington, in April; and was an invited faculty participant with the American Enterprise Institute Defenses and Critiques of the Market Seminar in Austin, Texas, in March.

Kolbo Gives Presentation

Associate Professor of Art Scott Kolbo gave a presentation as part of a panel titled “Making Procedures Messy Through Public Policy, Program Administration, Visual Art, and Research Methodologies” at the 2016 Rhetoric Society of America conference in Atlanta. Scott discussed how theories of procedural rhetoric relate to the visual arts.




Peter Moe
Moe Presents Paper

Assistant Professor of English and Director of Campus Writing Peter Moe recently presented a paper at the biennial Rhetoric Society of America conference in Atlanta. He presented a working draft of the same paper — "Delivering the Sentence" — earlier this spring at SPU's Humanities Colloquium.
