June 5 Remembrance Service

A message from University Ministries: On Monday, June 5, at 10 a.m., University Ministries will host a time of worship and remembrance in Tiffany Loop. Through corporate song, prayer, and reflection, we will root ourselves in the steadfast presence of God as we reflect together on the events that occurred three years ago on this date. This will be the last year we offer this service as most of the graduating class who experienced this tragedy will graduate this year, and this decision honors the wishes of the family members of the victims. We will use this opportunity to turn to the ongoing ways God heals those affected.

World Premiere for SPU’s 125 Anniversary: Symphony of Psalms

Professor Emeritus of Music Eric Hanson composed “Symphony of Psalms” for the commemoration of SPU's 125th anniversary celebration this year. The first public performance of the symphony will be Friday, June 2, at 7:30 p.m. in First Free Methodist Church. The concert features the Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, Men’s Choir, Women’s Choir, and the Symphony Orchestra. The concert is free and wheelchair accessible.

New Online Recruiting Platform and Career Resource Center

The Center for Career and Calling and the Office of Student Employment are excited to announce our upcoming transition to Handshake—an online college recruiting platform and career resource center for SPU undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni. Handshake will replace our current system, SPULink, and offer a more intuitive platform to post on campus positions and assist students with their career needs. In the coming weeks, Handshake will invite you to activate an account. In the meantime, please backup any documents and pending applicant information you have in SPULink, as they will not be saved. If you have an open job posting, you will need to re-post it in Handshake after June 1. If you need more information, visit Handshake's Employer website.

Percussion Ensemble
Percussion Ensemble Concert Tonight

The Percussion Ensemble will perform on Tuesday, May 30, 7:30 p.m. in E.E. Bach Theatre. The ensemble is directed by Dan Adams, director of percussion studies.

New Student Exhibits in Art Center Gallery. Opening Reception June 1.

The work of graduating art students in visual communication design will be featured through Friday, June 9, in SPU’s Art Center Gallery. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, June 1, 5-7 p.m.The gallery is located at 3 West Cremona. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.




The Colonel's House at Camp Casey Conference Center
Camp Casey Open House June 16

An open house at SPU's Camp Casey Conference Center on Whidbey Island, an historic military fort built at the turn of the 20th century, will be held Friday, June 16, 12-4 p.m. The event will feature tours of the barracks, mess hall, and Fort Casey Inn, which was formerly used as officer’s housing prior to World War I. Visitors will have the chance to join a guided tour of the Colonel’s House, reserved exclusively for SPU leadership and special groups. Steve Kobylk, a Fort Casey Volunteer Battalion member, will lead the tour, and SPU Professor of History Bill Woodward will deliver a historical lecture prior to the tour. These tours will be held at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Complimentary coffee and snacks will be provided as well. Guided tours of Fort Casey State Park, adjacent to the Camp Casey Conference Center, will also be held at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Stationery Orders for 2016-17 Fiscal Year

To place a stationery order in the 2016-17 fiscal year, make your order before 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6. Your order will be delivered June 16 and billed in the current fiscal year. Class of 2017 Senior Gift

A message from the Office of Student Life: This year’s Senior Gift Committee, made up of several SPU students and sponsored by ASSP, chose to focus on fundraising "to commemorate the lives of Paul Lee and Erin Kimminau." The tragic events of June 5, 2014,  impacted the entire SPU community, and the Senior Gift Committee would like to commemorate Paul’s life and honor the many who were affected. Students, faculty, and staff are working with the Lee family on a memorial installation for campus that will evoke peace, reflection, movement, and life.

This past fall, the SPU community also lost Erin Kimminau, who passed away in a car accident on her way back from protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline. Erin traveled across the country to Standing Rock for the sake of justice, life, and water. Erin will be honored through an endowment set up by her family, supporting servant and social justice scholarships at SPU.

10th of the month
Staff Payroll and Benefit Changes?

The 10th of each month is the last day to make changes to your upcoming payroll check. Do you need to add or remove your spouse and/or children from your health care plans? If so, contact Human Resources (HR) to complete the appropriate form. Changes might include events that are expected to impact your benefits and deductions, such as your spouse or children gaining or losing coverage due to employment, birth, marriage, etc. Additionally, any changes you wish to make to your 403(b) account contributions must be made by the 10th of the month. For changes to your 403(b) account, contact Transamerica Retirement Solutions at 1-888-676-5512 (5 a.m.-6 p.m. PST), or 1-800-755-5801. If you have any other benefits-related changes, call Mardeth Hughes in HR at 206-281-2816.




Camp Casey
Fall, Winter Reservation Requests for Camp Casey Due June 2

Fall and winter reservation requests are now being taken for the Faculty/Staff House at Camp Casey Conference Center on Whidbey Island. Requests can be made by full-time faculty and staff. The dates of stay are September 25, 2017, through January 2, 2018. Reservation requests are due by June 2, 2017. The fall and winter requests are selected by lottery and are not affected by summer stays at Casey. Please remember, if you will not have access to your SPU email, please indicate an alternate email so we can contact you in case your name is drawn. Visit the Camp Casey website to request a reservation. If you have questions, contact the Camp Casey Conference Center Office at 866-661-6604 or campcasey@spu.edu. Stephen Newby
Newby Honored by Seattle Sounders FC

Associate Professor of Music Stephen Newby will be awarded “The Golden Scarf” at the Seattle Sounders FC home game on Sunday, June 4. Stephen has been leading fans in the national anthem at nearly every Sounders home game. The award is given to individuals who have made a significant impact on Seattle and/or the sport of soccer. Congratulations, Stephen! Stephen’s work with the Sounders was featured in the winter 2012 issue or Response magazine.

Hunter, McFarland, Students Give Presentation

Assistant Professor of Biology Max Hunter, Instructor of Nursing Carol McFarland, and seniors Mary Mathison and Maddie Haugen presented breakout sessions at the recent Western Association of Advisors for the Health Professions Conference in Portland. The sessions were titled “Building Seminars to Better Support First-year Pre-Health Students” and “Engaging Students: Inter-Professionalism.” They shared their experience with Interprofessional Grand Rounds (IPGR) over the last three years, which evolved from faculty driven to student led. Max and Carol now advise and support the collaboration of student groups to present quarterly IPGR events. Select the link for a larger image of the presenters.

Marriage and Family Therapy faculty Claudia Grauf-Grounds, Hee-Sun Cheon, Scott Edwards, Don MacDonald, and Tina Schermer Sellers recently presented together at the Christian Association for Psychological Studies conference in Chicago, Illinois. Their presentation, "Attending to the In-Between: Skills to Sit Well with Clients Who Are Different than You," contributed to the overall conference theme of  "Breaking the Barriers: Poverty, Culture, Race, and Ethnicity." Karen Snedker
Snedker Gives Two Talks

Associate Professor Karen Snedker recently gave talk on “Understanding and Engaging Homelessness” to the Judson Park Retirement Community in Des Moines, Washington. She also recently served on a multidisciplinary panel on design and urban homelessness at the University of Washington. The event, “Designing for the Right to Dwell,” included experts from sociology and architecture and homeless advocates.

Hamilton’s Article Published

An article by Professor of History Michael Hamilton titled "How Faith Has Mattered for Historical Scholarship in Christian Worldview Perspective" was published in Fides et Historia, Vol. 49, No. 1 (Winter/Spring 2017), pp. 109-17. This is an expanded version of a paper he gave at the biennial national meeting of the Conference on Faith and History at Regent University in October 2016.

Moe’s Article Published

An article by Assistant Professor of English Peter Moe was published in Teaching English in the Two-Year College, vol. 44, no. 4, May 2017, pp. 422-23. The article, "Walking, Teaching," describes his practice of holding walking conferences with his writing students.

SPU’s 75th Anniversary Celebration

From University Archivist Adrienne Meier: To mark SPU’s 125th anniversary, we’re revisiting previous anniversary celebrations. This week we’ll look at the 75th anniversary celebration, 1965-66.

The diamond celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of the founding of Seattle Pacific took place between September 1965 and June 1966. The climax of the celebration was the 1966 Commencement exercises, held at the Seattle Center Opera House on June 12, 1966. A special 75th anniversary film that "portray[ed] the central thrust of SPC's purpose throughout the 75 years of its existence" was produced by Ken Anderson Films of Winona Lake, Indiana, and was shot on the SPC campus during the spring of 1964. The film, titled "Prescription for Doc," followed the stories of two premed students as they prepare for their professional lives. One student, Jim, is a professing Christian, and it is through his example that the other student, Doc, comes to faith in Christ. The film was partly a recruitment tool for SPC, and partly a sort of altar call, with the college making it available to churches to show for a small rental fee.
