Camp Casey Summer Reservations Requests

Summer reservation requests are now being taken for the Faculty/Staff House at SPU’s Camp Casey Conference Center on Whidbey Island. The dates of stay are June 15-September 28, 2015. Summer requests are based on years of service to SPU and past summer stays at Casey. Employees are ranked by their years of service as verified by Human Resources.  Once the ranking is developed, the summer stay history is cross checked. If you have stayed at Casey during the summer, your ranking is replaced with the years it has been since your stay at Casey. If you have questions, contact Camp Casey at 866-661-6604 or campcasey@spu.edu. Online reservation requests are due April 5, 2015.

Welcome Students on Campus for College Planning Day March 23

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is partnering with the Washington Council to host the annual College Planning Day on Monday, March 23. The event will run from 9:30 a.m. through noon. More than 550 high school students and 20 college presenters will participate, and students will have the opportunity to visit several college presentations of their choosing while on our campus. Please make the students and presenters feel welcome when you see them on campus.

Next Sitecore/Contribute Brownbag Lunch Is March 19

Have you been trained in Sitecore or Contribute but keep putting off making changes to your site? Join members of the UC Web Team this Thursday, March 19, for our monthly brownbag Q&A. Sitecore/Contribute Brownbags occur the third Thursday of most months, noon to 1 p.m., in the Lower Weter Hall large conference room. If you have changes you need to make to your site and you’re nervous about making them on your own, bring them with you, and we’ll walk you through them. Subway, Common Grounds Closed March 25

On Wednesday, March 25, Subway and the Common Grounds Coffee Kiosk in Weter Hall will be closed due to a Seattle Public Utilities water line project. The Corner Place Market will be open 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and will be stocked with Simply to Go entrees, drip coffee, and pastries. Sandella’s/Jamba Go will also be open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Check out the Campus Dining Spring Break hours online.

Book Camp Casey for Your Department or Church Retreat

If you’re looking for a place for a department retreat, don’t forget about SPU’s Camp Casey Conference Center on Whidbey Island. Department retreat rates are as low as $15 per person, and rates for a church or community organization to which a faculty or staff member belongs are $20-26 per person. If you’re looking for a place for a family event, Camp Casey also has a campground available for rent. If you are on Whidbey Island and would like a tour of the facilities, contact the Camp Casey Conference Center at 866-661-6604 or campcasey@spu.edu to set up a visit in advance.

Annual Biometric Screenings, March 25-26. Earn $100 Cigna Incentive.

SPU Human Resources, Cigna, and Summit Health are offering free, confidential health and wellness screenings this month. The on-campus sessions will be held in the Library Seminar Room, 7:30 a.m.-12 p.m., Wednesday, March 25, and Thursday, March 26. Sign up online at Summit Health’s confidential site. Register as a new user, regardless if you have used this website in the past. Please arrive five to 10 minutes prior to your appointment to complete some general paperwork. Screenings will be done by highly skilled nursing staff and certified health professionals. Your personal screenings will include a brief health-risk questionnaire, as well as tests to determine height, weight, waist circumference, cholesterol levels, glucose levels, blood pressure, and body mass index. You will need to fast from food, beverages (with the exception of water), and personal medications for at least eight hours prior to your appointment. Make sure to bring your Cigna card with you to be able to process your $100 incentive through myCigna Motivate ME program. Hire a SPRINTer as a Fundraiser Work Project

This summer, SPRINT (Seattle Pacific Reachout International) will send eight student teams to learn and serve alongside local leaders around the world. Hire a SPRINT student to help with yardwork, cleaning projects, or other household chores. Your work project helps students raise funds for summer international service-learning and mission trips. Christine Hoyle
Hoyle Gives Presentation

Christine Hoyle, School of Health Sciences associate dean for graduate programs, gave a presentation with colleagues from the University of Washington at the 2014 International Conference on Prevention and Management of Chronic Conditions. Her presentation was titled “Building Skills in Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention for the DNP Prepared Nurse Practitioner: Multigenerational Case Based Approach.” The conference was held in Bangkok, Thailand, February 25-27, 2015. The theme of this conference was global perspectives for prevention and management of chronic conditions. The conference was organized through the cooperation of the following universities and organizations: Ramathibodi School of Nursing, Mahidol University; School of Nursing, Prince of Songkla University; World Health Organization; Sigma Theta Tau International; School of Nursing, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; School of Nursing, Yale University; School of Nursing, John Hopkins University; and School of Nursing, University of Washington.




Carol Redfield
Redfield Presents Research

Instructor of Nursing Carol Redfield presented two research posters at the Building Elder Friendly Futures Locally and Globally UW Gerontology Conference held in October at the University of Washington. The first research poster, titled “International Intergenerational Interaction to Enhance Aging Well-being and Student Learning,” was co-authored with 2014 gradates Ting-Chun (Addison) Lin and Megan Busek; and Valorie Orton, SPU instructor of nursing. The second poster, “Changes in Interpersonal Goals and Well-Being Across Social Interactions Between Nursing Students and Older Adults,” was co-authored with colleagues from the School of Psychology, Family, and Community.




Pacific Northwest Historians Guild
Scheuerman, Nelson, Pope-Levison, Woodward Contribute to Local History Conference

Several SPU professors contributed to the 28th Pacific Northwest Historians Guild conference, held at the downtown Seattle Public Library, March 6-7. The theme was “The Urban Northwest in Landscape and Story.”  Richard Scheuerman (Education) presented “Tithlow Farm to Destiny’s City: Tacoma’s Grain Industry Origins.” Bryce Nelson (Education and retired University Librarian) described the Progressive Era character of the “Origins of Large-Scale Public Schooling in Seattle, 1900-1930.”  Priscilla Pope-Levison’s (Theology) “From Kansas City to Seattle: Emma Ray’s Racial Uplift and Interracial Cooperation” drew on her award-winning book, Building the Old-Time Religion. Since Priscilla was out of town, Bill Woodward (History) read the paper. As vice president of the guild, Bill also officially conferred the Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award on Ron Chew, longtime director of the Wing Luke Museum; hosted the opening plenary session; and chaired two panels on “Civic Life and Forces of Change” and “The Military and Its Impact.”

Pope-Levison Elected President

Professor of Theology Priscilla Pope-Levison was elected president of the Wesleyan Theological Society for 2017-18. The current president is Associate Professor of Theology Doug Koskela. Past presidents have been School of Theology faculty members Rob Wall and Doug Strong.

Lee Invited Speaker

Jaeil Lee, professor of apparel design and merchandising, was invited to give a congratulatory speech to the Technical Design Association’s kickoff meeting at Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea. Technical Design Association aims to foster technical design in apparel design education and the fashion industry in Korea. The organization was previously called Korean Modelist Association.
