Prospective Students on Campus This Week

On Thursday evening, January 29, and all day Friday, January 30, the Undergraduate Admissions Office will host about 100 prospective students and their families. We encourage all faculty and staff to welcome these visitors when they see them around campus. King Lear
SPU Theatre Department Presents King Lear

The SPU Theatre Department stages one of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies about a king who decides to divide his kingdom among his daughters, and the disastrous consequences that follow. Performances of King Lear are January 29-31 and February 5-7 at 7:30 p.m. in E.E. Bach Theatre in McKinley Hall. There will be a Saturday matinee performance on February 7 at 2 p.m. Learn more and buy tickets online.

SPU Art Center Gallery
Alumni Show at the Art Center Gallery

The SPU Art Center Gallery is hosting the first Alumni Show, featuring recent work from SPU graduates in visual communication design, studio art, and illustration/new pictures. The show runs until Friday, February 13. A reception for the artists is Thursday, February 5, 5-7 p.m. at the gallery. Admission is free. The Art Center Gallery, located at 3 West Cremona Street, is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Visit the website for more information.

CEO of Moz Comes to Campus

Sarah Bird, CEO of Moz, will speak at the next School of Business, Government, and Economics Dean Speaker Series event on Tuesday, January 27, 12:50 p.m. in the Library Seminar Room. She will speak on “Making Moz: Everything You Wanted to Know (And Some Stuff You Probably Didn't).” All are welcome, but space is limited. SPU Student Employee of the Year Nominations

Do you have an outstanding student worker to recommend for the annual SPU Student Employee of the Year award? If so, contact Student Employment Coordinator Danielle Richmond at dani@spu.edu for the nomination form. SPU’s winner will be submitted to the regional competition as well. Teacher Certification Information Tea January 29

Puget Sound Blood Mobile on Campus January 29-30

Take advantage of this opportunity to serve the community and help save the lives of others in need by donating blood January 29-30. The Puget Sound Blood Mobile will be located near Tiffany Loop by Third Avenue West. Wear your Seahawks gear and get a special blue-and-green bandage, then post a picture to the Seahawks Facebook page to support the team and the organizations they partner with such as Children's Hospital. Film Screening of American Winter

The SPU Tent 3 Host Committee is sponsoring a screening of the documentary American Winter on Tuesday, January 27, 7 p.m. in Emerson Hall Lobby. The film follows formerly middle class families in financial crisis and needing assistance for the first time in their lives. Filmed over the course of one winter in Portland, Oregon, American Winter presents an intimate and emotionally evocative snapshot of the state of our economy as it is playing out in many American families. Faculty and staff are invited to attend the screening.

Nominate a Student for the 2015 Barnabas Scholarship

Do you know a student who demonstrates Christian character, has made a commitment to on- or off-campus service, shows a willingness to take on tasks regardless of recognition or challenge, demonstrates leadership, and is currently a junior? If so, we encourage you to nominate him or her for the Barnabas Servant Leadership Scholarship. Recipients of this scholarship receive a $750 cash grant and a contribution of $250 given in their name to a charity of their choice. Online nominations are due by February 13, 2015, and can be found on the University Ministries Student Leaders website.

Image Journal Hosts Milton Fellow Reading January 27

Image journal hosts a reading with 2014-15 Milton Fellow Dyana Herron at the Art Center Gallery on Tuesday, January 27, at 7 p.m. Dyana is spending the academic year in residency at Image and SPU working on her first book-length manuscript; a work of creative nonfiction that focuses on her hometown, her family, and her brother's federal prison sentence.

Faculty Recital With Catherine Haight January 30

Join adjunct music faculty member Catherine Haight, soprano, and piano accompanist Emily Witt for an evening of music by beloved composers, including Strauss, Duparc, Rodrigo, and Warlock on Friday, January 30, 7:30 p.m. at First Free Methodist Church. The concert is titled “Come All Ye Songsters: The Flowering of Song From the Elizabethan Age to the Modern Era.” The concert is free and wheelchair accessible.




Mileage Rate Increase

SPU reimburses employees for local business transportation expenses using the standard mileage allowance. The new standard mileage rate for 2015 is 57.5 cents per mile. This is an increase from 56 cents in 2014. Please update your Request for Reimbursement forms to reflect the increase. The forms can be found online at the Finance Office website.

Ewald
Ewald Presents Paper

C. May Marston Assistant Professor of Classical Languages and Civilizations Owen Ewald presented a paper at the American Association of Neo-Latin Studies panel at the annual meeting of the Society for Classical Studies in New Orleans, Louisiana. His paper was titled “Out of the Pietist Labyrinth: Susanna Sproegel’s Latin Verses.”




Lee Part of Lecture Series

Professor of Apparel Design and Merchandising Jaeil Lee spoke on “Global Apparel Product Development and Technical Design” at Sungshin Women’s University in Seoul, South Korea. Her presentation was part of a special lecture series offered to students and faculty in the Department of Clothing and Textiles at Sungshin Women’s University.

Early Falcon Mascot Toy

From University Archivist Adrienne Meier. “Plush SPC Falcon mascots like this one were sold in the bookstore during the early 1960s. The little falcon’s wings and head move, and a small tag on the bottom reveals that it was made by Collegiate Mfg. Co. of Ames, Iowa. It’s currently housed in the display case on the main level of the Ames Library as part of an exhibit on the history of the falcon as the mascot of Seattle Pacific.”

Dividing Perennials

From SPU Master Gardener Jeff Daley. “Last year, gardening around the Alexander Hall construction site was definitely challenging while the building was being renovated. With that all behind us, I have been working diligently through the flower beds, dividing, transplanting, pruning, and doing regular garden cleanup.

Dividing and transplanting rejuvenates perennial plants and creates a garden of abundance over time. If you missed the opportunity to divide your perennials last fall, we are just now going into the next best time to do that. Early garden maintenance is a proactive start to a beautiful spring garden. As daylight starts to increase and daytime temperatures warm, plants begin to break dormancy and emerge from the soil. This makes it easy to locate and identify plants and gives you a good idea where to divide them.

The garden around Alexander Hall has always been one of our premier areas of focus for campus garden tours. Happily, it's looking like the beautiful perennial border garden that encircles the building will return very strong this season. Right now, everything is looking a little sleepy, but walk by periodically and watch as the bare ground begins to come to life. In a few weeks you will be amazed!” (Select the link to see photos.)
