Sharleen Kato, professor of family and consumer sciences, has taught undergraduate students for over 30 years; she served as the Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Department director for 15 of those years. Dr. Kato holds a doctorate in education and is professionally certified in FCS human development and family studies.
Over the years, Dr. Kato has traveled to dozens of countries. Her passions include family-life education, cultural diversity, and helping families who are resource-challenged. As part of her scholarship, she spends two weeks in the Philippines each year with students as they serve in an orphanage and participate in feeding programs and a prenatal clinic, while learning to build community-support systems.
In 2017, she became the first director of the Office of Global Engagement, bringing together years of international scholarship and passion for international education.
